Off-road excursions
Parnis with Mud (December 2001)
This little excursion was done with my friend John and his Daewoo Musso. My experience with 4x4 at that time was very small, so John and I took it as a chance to introduce me in some of the intricacies of 4x4ing. The rest is a description taken from John's web site.
The trip started in the lower parts of Parnis, which were covered with mud and fog. Here is a picture of the happy team, before starting attacking the more difficult parts of the course.
Since the owner of the Pinin had very little experience in 4x4ing, we decided to take him on a relatively easy course, which however was pretty muddy that day, since Athens had received several days of rain. The area of the course, near Parnis mountain was also quite foggy. Here you can see the Pinin handling the mud.
We continued our trip through some very muddy roads, which were made worst by sevaral crossing of motocross fans. Here you can see the Musso handling the ooozy stuff.
This was the first obstacle for the Pinin, a deep ditch, which was quite erroded by the motocross people. We tried to pass it sideways, but the Pinin couldn't make it. The two opposite wheels were in the mud, thus steeling all forward power. From its specs, the Pinin should be equipped with a Limited slip rear diff, but it was not of great help. We had to take a more mild approach and use some more power to make it go through.
The Musso, probably because of its greater length, passed through the ditch, without a hickup.
Then we came across another ditch, which was more like a muddy stream. 4Low was engaged to go down. The Musso, although I was afraid that its front end would scratch the mud, went down fine.
It was the Pinin's turn to hold the ditch, and it went down fine, with its rear wheel on the air, as you can see in this picture.
A little further down, we met with a mud pit, right next to a piece of asphalt road we were following. I could not resist the urge to cross it, so much so, that I went through it, with 2Hi!!! The Musso went throguh, after lifting the water almost up to its hood! The muddy hill after the pit, was no problem and on your right you can see the victorious Musso posing.
A couple more mud crossing spots were handled. Both cars went through just fine.
The road was then turning rough, with water erroded downhills. You can see the happy couple handling the rough stuff here.
After a short break for some sandwitches, we went back on the asphalt, to return home. It was then, that I spotted a nice hill, quite steep. The hill was climbed uneventfully with 4Low, and then I got the urge to make the Musso climb some rocks. On the left, you see me going up the rocks, Dionysis is watching. On the right, you can see how far up the Musso went. The luck of lockers didn't allow me to go any higher, but at least I found the spot, where I'll test my ARBs, when installed.
The happy team is posing on the hill top, after a great day. The smile on Dionysis face shows how much he enjoyed his first real 4x4 trip.
Here you can see the Musso together with its new friend, posing on the hill top. Happy fourwheeling to all.
