Cold Steel "Recon 1" 27LT

Together with the Voyager, I also ordered another one of the Cold Steel folders family, this time a Recon 1. The Recons is also a whole family of folders, consisting of five members. Two Clip point blades, (one half-serrated and one plain), two Tanto blades (one half-serrated and one plain) and one half-serrated Drop point blade. All of the blades are 4" long and made out of AUS 8A stainless steel, then coated with black teflon. The handles are again Zytel and the locking mechanism is a patended mechanism called Ultra Lock.

The Recon is also a big knife, but somehow its size is not as apparent as the Voyager's. Maybe the black-coated blade or the shape of its handle have something to do with this impression, I do not know. In any case, the Recons come with only 4" blade, so I'll have to live with its size (not that I do not like it on this knife).

This knife looks and feels all-business. The handles are secured by 5 hex-head screws, while a similar, but biger screw is used as the blade axle. The pattended locking mechanism secures the blade in the open position very well, and it also gives you a very positive feeling, both in the open and closed positions.

The knife's pocket clip is also secured by three screws, and in this model, it is reversible for southpaws, although it cannot be installed in a manner allowing the tip-down carry of the knife (not that I care about it).

The handles feature a sculptured area, which is supposed to help you locate the thumb disk, in order to open the blade. Unfortunately, this recess is molded at the wrong place, at least for me. If I let my thumb slide in the recess, I do not hit the thumb disk. I have to align my thumb with the rear edge of the recess, in order to hit the disk, so this operation is not as intuitive as it could have been. This is the only reason, why this knife receives a "Good" in the Overall Impression, instead of an "Excellent".

Purchased from : Knifecenter.com
Overall impression : Good for 74.95 US$

I'll be adding more information about this knife, as I use it.
