"November 17th" Terrorist Acts |
The first appearance of "November 17th" was shortly after the end of the military regime, in Greece. The following is a short chronicle of the most significant terrorist acts performed by the group. Apologies are in order if some of the foreign names are not correctly rendered, as I do not have access to an English text with the names involved in these acts.
23/12/1975: Assassination of the chief of the local CIA group in Greece, Richard Wells.
14/12/1976: Assassination of the retired policeman Evangellos Mallios, who had participated in the military regime scandals.
16/1/1980: Assassination of the second-in-command of the SWAT units of the Police, Pantelis Petrou and his driver Sotiris Stamoulis at Pagrati, Athens.
15/11/1983: Assassination of Captain George Cantes one of the JUSSMAG personel in Athens and his driver Nikos Veloutsos.
21/2/1985: Assassination of the publisher Nikos Momferatos and his driver George Roussetis.
8/4/1986: Assassination of the businessman D. Aggelopoulos.
24/4/1987: Bomb attach to an american military bus.
10/8/1987: Bomb attach to an american military bus.
1/3/1988: Assassination of the businessman Alexandros Athanasiadis-Mpodosakis.
23/3/1988: Bomb attacks agains four cars belonging to Turk diplomats, in Pagrati Athens.
23/7/88: Assassination of the American Naval Attache William Nordeen, in Kifissia, Athens.
10/1/1989: Assassination of the D. A. Konstantinos Androulidakis.
8/5/1989: Attempt to assassinate ex-minister George Petsos.
26/9/1989: Assassination of the member of the parliament Pavlos Mpakogiannis. This act is estimated that it caused severe changes in the structure of "November 17th" and in their actions after that date.
25/12/1989: "November 17th" enters a military camp in Larissa and steals several rockets and other ammunition.
10/7/1990: Rocket launced against the company Procter & Gamble.
20/11/1990: Assassination attempt against the businessman Vardis Vardinogiannis. The victim was saved by its car armor. Three rockets and a car full of explosives were used for this attack.
16/12/1990: Attack with two rockets against the offices of the EEC in Athens.
24/1/1991: Bomb exploded in the offices of the French Military Attache.
28/1/1991: Rocket attack against the offices of American Express in Athens.
13/3/1991: Assassination of American Sargeant Ronald Stewart in Glyfada, Athens.
7/10/1991: Assassination of the Press Attache Cetin Giorgiou in Pagkrati, Athens (I think he was Turk).
23/3/1992: A close-encounter between the Police and the members of the "November 17th" at Ampelokipi, Athens (Louizis Riankour) ends up in a fire fight. The terrorists managed to escape.
14/7/1992: Rocket attack against the Financial Minister Mr. John Paleokrassas. The minister is not harmed, but an innocent bystander is killed.
24/1/1994: Assassination of ex-banker Michalis Vranopoulos.
4/7/1994: Assassination of another Turk diplomat Omer Shipachioglou.
15/3/1995: Attack against the TV Station "Mega Channel". 15/2/1996: Rocket attack against U.S. Embassy in Athens. The rocket missed its target.
28/5/1997: Assassination of the ship owner Kostas Peratikos.
1/4/1999: Rocket attack against the offices of the political party PASOK.
17/4/1999: Rocket attack against the residence of the German embassador in Greece.
15/6/2000: Assassination of the British Military Attache Stevens Saunders.
Finally, the Greek Police has evidences that several of the arrested members of "November 17th" had commited robberies and other common felonies, during the last 27 years.
