Off-road excursions

Parnis (January 2004)

Well, after a long long time, I got the chance to take the Cherokee for some off-road playing. On the weekend of January 24th, 2004, the twins were ... abandoned at their grandmother's home, so that me and my wife could get some rest. That gave me the chance to arrange for some off-roading, together with my friend, Konstantinos, an avid off-roader, who owns a recently rebuild, ex-Greek-Police Land Rover Defender.

The snow storm which had hit Greece during the previous week, had left several areas blocked by snow and ice. So we decided to try some dirt roads near Athens, at the feet of Mt. Parnis. Unfortunatelly, the first dirt road we followed, near Varipombi, was muddy, snowed, and frozed, in other words very nice, but blocked with fallen trees. A forest ranger we met on our way out of that area, told us that most of the roads around there, were having the same problems. We verified his words ourselves, by trying some of them, with no luck.

All there was left for us to do, was to go to some less tree-covered area, and have some fun. So we drove to another area near the teleferic starting point. I've been in that area before (see previous excursions), but not with the Cherokee, so it was a good chance to see how the Indian would do in the snow.

From this point on, there is not much to tell. There were some places where the snow was deep and ice had formed below the soft white stuff. There, we couldn't pass. Lockers would have helped, but none of us had them. At other areas, where there was less snow and ice, and a flat ground, we could pass and play, and this is what we did.

Below, you can find some pictures we snapped. Unfortunatelly, with only the two drivers in the group, we tend to enjoy driving more, than taking pictures. All pictures open in another window, after viewing each picture, close that window, so you can see another.

I am now looking forward to the next time grandmom will take over the twins. Until then, I can only dream of some serious off-road obstacles.
