Off-road excursions
Parnassos (January 2001)
This was my first mud experience with the Musso. It was late January, when a friend called and suggested a single-day trip to Parnassos, a mountain (and ski ressort) two hours from Athens. We arrived there, but due to bad weather (high winds) the ski ressort was not operating, so we had time to spare. So, after spending some time playing with the snow (children and Dushka enjoyed it), we headed for the nearest dirt road, which was a nightmare! The first part was deep, slick mud. Further up, the mud was less, but the trail was covered with snow.
We started going up the road in company of one Land Rover and a Suzuki Vitara. I was the last one in the convoy. The initial, very slick part was easily passed, with some sideways motion, but nothing that could not be controlled, thanks to the BFG Mud Terrains. I constantly was keeping a long distance from the vehicle in front (the Vitara), in order to avoid any pitfalls they might fall in.
The Land Rover turned around and abandoned at some point, not due to trail difficulties (it was easily shallowing everything in its path), but due to engagements of its owner at the nearest town. Before leaving however, we discovered that its owner had also with him, another Siberian Husky, a male. Dushka was very anxious to meet the guy, so time to let the animals out to meet each other and get to talk with the drivers a bit. After Dushka lost interest in the male dog, the Suzuki and us, continued up the hill, until we reached a point we could make a U-turn. At the downhill path, I was first, the Suzuki following behind. I got across the whole trail, without a problem, except of the slides encountered at the (now) last part of it, where the mud had become very deep and slick. The Suzuki, on the other hand, got stuck, and the road assistance had to be called to get them out of there, since at that time I wasn't carrying any rescue equipment with me, so I could not help. Getting the Suzuki stuck was expected, the guy was running wide, AP tires. Thank God I had the Mud Terrains, which seem to be doing an excellent job.
One final picture, showing the ... brave husky in its natural environment. Dushka was enjoying it, I wish I could say the same for myself, I was frozen to death.
