M-1911 Models : Pistol Dynamics

Pistol Dynamics is the company of Paul Liebenberg, a very famous pistolsmith. Pistol Dynamics offers purpose-built handguns for carry, competition, Law Enforcement and military applications. In addition, Paul is hand building 24 signed and numbered 1911 pistols that epitomizes the design and quality of workmanship that is synonymous with his name. Separate from the catalogued custom handgun line, these units have assigned numbers between 01-24 and are offered on a first come first served basis. The examples are built on Series 70 or earlier commercial Colt's as well as our own Pistol Dynamics units. Here are the models shown in Paul's site.

Signature

The Signature Series is a full house custom 1911 with no effort spared to produce the ultimate in performance, mechanical fit and aesthetic perfection. Each piece is built to customer specification and to perform as close to ammunition capability as possible by eliminating mechanical variables and maximizing the efficiency of the system. The base components are checked and measured for tolerance prior to the commencement of the work to ensure the compatibility of parts.

Build tolerances are held to the nth degree of precision for manual machining and hand fitting. For instance, the slide stop pin hole in the frame is trued, relocated if necessary, reamed and mated to a ground and hardened slide stop pin that fits to a tolerance of .0005" to the barrel and link. A Match Grade stainless steel barrel is precision fit to the slide and frame to similar tool room tolerances to produce accuracy performance equal to, or better than, the finest target pistols. Barrel unlock time is adjusted for each caliber.

Beavertails are hand made to individually blend with the particular frame in process. They are hand machined and shaped for a precise aesthetic and ergonomic fit. All metal checkering is cut by hand using a new checkering file on each pistol. Only the finest sights and components are used in the assembly of the piece and each sight is individually measured prior to installation. Sight cuts and dovetails are hand machined to the 'numbers' to avoid light gaps and to ensure the correct amount of dovetail tolerance. Bomar sights are pocketed.

Even though the Signature Series is not intended to be an ornament, but to be used extensively, pistols are tested and targeted 'in the white' before the final finish is applied in deference to the collector. All parts are then hand polished and finished to customer specification. The final touch is an engraved and filled 'Liebenberg' signature logo on the slide, marking the piece as the ultimate expression of the gun makers art.

Scout

The 'Scout' is a no bull, precision built, working handgun intended as a daily user for IDPA or IPSC competition, personal carry and SRT applications. The gun draws it's name from the Rhodesian Selous Scouts who tirelessly battled communist insurgents and terrorists during the Southern African bush wars.

Available on both the 1911 and Browning HP the 'Scout' is hand built with two primary points of focus - function and reliability. To ensure optimum real world performance and the widest range of ammunition compatibility, the 'Scout' is constructed with a measured amount of 'combat tolerance' and is also designed to be field stripable. Every aspect of function is dealt with; chamber dimensions, correct slide and frame fit, extractor design and 'street' specification triggers.

While this handgun is designed to be a tool; ergonomics, aesthetics and accuracy is just as important on the 'Scout' Series as it is on any other Liebenberg handgun. Custom beavertails are standard on the 1911 version, as are ambi safeties and a carry 'bevel' package. Components are selected and optimized for durability. Novak fixed rear sight with side dovetail front is standard. Other options such as 'pinch check' slide serrations and slide guards are available for the 1911 based guns.

The standard finish on the 'Scout' is a utility matt black with brushed slide panels. However, the base polish, metal prep and blend of components is performed with the same attention to detail as our finest custom handguns.

For those with military or law enforcement affiliations Paul Piquette offers hand cut shields and insignia; tastefully located on top of the slide, behind the front sight, that adds personalization for the user who may be a police officer or member of the armed forces.

Of particular interest is the way Paul mounts his pistols front sights. The front sight is dovetailed from the front of the slide, and held in place both by friction, but also by a special bushing, as shown in the picture at right.

Also, the strange beavertail used on Paul's gun, this must be the most up-curved beavertail I've ever seen.

Also, Paul is using a special wide barrel link and precision pin that replaces the stock design. The system enhances barrel stability from the instant of ignition all the way through the cycling process. This ensures consistent barrel lock up relative to the sight plane after every shot, according to Paul.
