Guns - My Opinion
Ever since I remember myself as a kid, I always had one (or usually more than one), toy guns to play with. As a kid, guns were definitely my favorite toy, seconded only by cars. These two things (guns and cars) have played significant role in my life, and they are still two of my favorite pass-times.
Unfortunately, people all over the world these days, tend to accuse guns (and cars, also) for all the stupidities that they themselves perform. One has to understand that a gun is nothing more than a tool, like a hammer or handsaw. It is not the gun that performs some illegal act, it is the person who holds it.
As far as I am concerned, I love guns and especially handguns, hence this page you read now. I love them for what they really are, tools. I also love them for the role they can play in preserving one's life. To use the worlds of a great American, a gun is 'the great equalizer'. A society where no criminals exist, has of course no reason for guns. However, in today's world, where police forces are on limited budgets and therefore underarmed and undertrained, a person has to take upon himself, the obligation of taking care of his beloved ones.
As long as criminals are left free, only a few hours after they rob, kill or rape just because they have the money to raise bail, or because they bribe justice servants, as long as some people (due to their social position, or other privilege) are far and above the law, as long as the police responds to calls after 30 minutes or an hour (if they come at all), people will arm themselves to protect what they value.
Unfortunately, modern societies tend to be against guns, for the very simple reason that guns give power to their bearers. The grandfathers of modern Americans tried to guarantee the right of the American people to keep and bear arms, by including this right in their constitution. Today's politicians try to proclaim that the words "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" refers only to the military or police forces and not the people themselves. What a joke, when there are other articles, where the meaning of the term 'people' is in no way associated with military or police! The US of A is not the only country were guns are considered (at least by some), to be bad. All over the world, governments restrict the possession of arms, simply because armed people can overthrown an unjust government, and governments tend to be unjust.
Personally, I believe that guns should be free. It is quite evident, all over the world, that criminals will get guns, through their own, illegal ways. As a result, the only ones affected by gun restricting laws, are the law abiding citizens, who cannot get the necessary equipment to protect themselves and their families. Why?
There is one other reason for which I believe that guns have to be free. In the USA, some states have very strict laws (like Massachusetts, thanks to Mike Dukakis) against guns. Citizens of these states have almost no hope of obtaining the permit required to carry a gun. On the other hand, there are other states, where buying a gun and carrying it with you is very simple (like New Hampshire). In those last states, criminal records show that violence is very lower than in the gun-controlling states. It is only logical. Crooks will prefer to break in a house in Massachusetts, where they are almost certain that the owner has no gun to protect himself, than in New Hampshire, where almost every household has a gun (long or handgun).
My wishes may be whatever they are, the reality however is that guns will never be free, as long as there are corrupted politicians and corrupted public employees in the government. As a result, law-abiding citizens will get killed or robbed, just because they are deprived of the way to protect themselves.
Enough of this. These pages were created by the author, simply to show to the general public (and especially the people of my own country) what guns are. If it will succeed in convincing some people that guns are not evil, so much the better. I will try to pass on, some of the knowledge I gathered, during the years I've owned guns. If you do like the reading, please visit the rest of the pages, else please, do not bother to flame me, or to post me your opinion about how evil guns are etc. I do not care to hear it. Sorry if this sounds rude, but each one is entitled to his own opinion and I do not ask you to share mine. On the other hand, I am not obliged to hear yours.
