Athos is a very interesting case, in the whole world. It is part of Greece, however, it is also a separate communicty, entirely governed by the Greek Orthodox Church. It is located on the Eastern-most peninsula of Chalkidiki, near Thessaloniki. Access to Athos is only allowed to male visitors. There are a lot of anicent monasteries, on Athos peninsula, populated by monks. Visitors need to obtain a special permit before going there, otherwise access will not be allowed. Finally visitors can reside in the monasteries, as there are no hotels or other sort of accomodation.

For ham radio operators, it is well known that Athos is considered to be a separate DX country.
